Kinja'd!!!

I tried to find an E30 gasser (to counterpoint the M3) and couldn’t, but this may cause even more cringing.

Oh sure. It’s cringey, but it’s its own kind of great. Kind of like when you see a ‘41 Willys gasser that really was a ‘41 Willys once, and not a repro body.

Wouldn't that be considered a Gasser?

Who knows maybe it was a basket case only any good for a race car.

Yes, but it’s a 2002 gasser, not an E30.

Ooooo ok! After watching the Petrolious video about the orange 2002 I really want to pick one up

Apparently there are two 2002 gassers out there. One with a BMW six + supercharger in Europe, which is red, and this one, with a blown rat motor of some kind, probably.

That really was a lovely video - as much as I romanticize the idea of a project car, it’s hard to fathom how much work and money that goes into creating something unique and personal like that orange 2002. I know if I had this car it’d still be in a heap in my parents’ garage or I’d have no savings left because someone else did the work.

However, I hope that someday I can have a car that I can work on.

I wouldn't have done this, but at least it looks well done for whatever it is.

Best looking bmw I’ve ever seen

My 2002 is this color, and I love this thing. For any haters, it’s a big-bumper square light car, so relax.

There’s a whole subset of drag racers from the olden days called gassers. The car is a factory body, with a “whatever” approach to engine, so it’s usually a supercharged Chevy V8. Further, gasser runs are quite short, so aerodynamics don’t come up much, and runs are made with the coolant in the engine - no radiator - and an oil (?) can on the nose. Traditionally, the cars used for gasser racing were among the lightest made (Willys, Ford Falcon, two-door Chevies, etc.) and the engine was set up high and back, so that dynamic weight shift puts more pressure on the rear tires. To make room for the engine and simplify things, while tipping the car back, they usually have a straight steel axle below the frame, either blocked or on minimal suspension.

Tl:dr: The car above is a gasser. Straight axle front, tilted back, big V8, light (factory body) car, big tires, no radiator.

From a BMW purist standpoint, it’s cringey. For everybody else, it’s at least somewhat The Sweetness.

That’s interesting; are these the kinds of cars you see doing wheelies on a drag strip when they launch? I'm not familiar with quarter mile times, but, for comparison's sake, a Hellcat on drag tires does sub-11 second quarter mile times, I'd imagine that since something like this BMW is a drag specialist it can do low 10s or even below that?

A-class gassers first broke ten seconds in ‘62. A really good classic style gasser is in the tens or elevens, a spectacular one, less. They’re not as fast as Funny Cars, but they are quite quick.
